Industry: Construction and Engineering
Project Scope: Conti Testing Laboratories was engaged to evaluate the chemical composition of engineered fuels, biomass, and biochar intended for use as alternative fuel sources in industrial boilers and kilns. The project included comprehensive (CHNOS, Hg, Cl) analysis to support Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting and to ensure compliance with EPA emissions requirements, with a focus on nitrogen oxides (NOx), chlorine, sulfur, and PFAS reduction through thermal decomposition. Additionally, we assessed the fuels’ heat content (BTU, HHV, LHV, NCV) to determine their viability for effective industrial heating applications.Confidence in repeatable results is driven in part by our laboratory’sunique expertise in sample preparation of heterogeneous materials.
Services Provided
Conti provided routine and precise chemical analysis well within our core service capabilities, including CHNOS elemental analysis, direct mercury analysis, anion analysis, and calorimetry testing to evaluate heat content.
Select Methods Used
- HHV and LHV: ASTM D5865 / ASTM E711
- Proximate – Moisture, Ash, Volatile Matter, Fixed Carbon: ASTM E1755 / ASTM E872 / ASTM E1131
- Ultimate – C, H, N, O, S: ASTM D5373 / ASTM D4239
- Ash Oxides – ICP: ASTM D6349
- Trace Heavy Metals: EN-15297 / ISO 6561
- Sulfur: ASTM D1552
- Mercury – Hg: ASTM D6722
- Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine: ASTM D7359
Results and Impact
The analysis confirmed that the engineered fuels produced lower emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels, reduced commercial waste streams, and demonstrated sufficient heating value to serve as a viable, sustainable fuel source for industrial kilns and boilers.
