Pennsylvania Overburden Sampling and Testing
Applicability: In Pennsylvania, “overburden” refers to the rock, soil, and other material that lies above or between mineral deposits and must be removed during surface mining operations. In general, overburden applicability in Pennsylvania mining is closely tied to the potential environmental impacts, particularly water quality, and specific requirements for analysis and management are determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the type and location of the mining operation.
Purpose: In Pennsylvania, “overburden” in mining refers to the layers of soil and rock that lie above a coal seam or other mineral deposit. Its primary purpose is to be removed in order to access the valuable resource beneath, typically for extraction through surface mining methods like strip mining. After the resource is extracted, the overburden is typically replaced during the reclamation process.
