Determination of Hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI)
Applicability: This procedure applies to the sampling and analysis of airborne hexavalent chromium.
Scope: The working range is 0.001 to 5 mg/m3 for a 200-L air sample. This method may be used for the determination of soluble Cr(VI).

Exposure: A variety of industries and many occupations are potentially exposed to Hexavalent Chromium, CR(VI). Hexavalent chromium exposure can occur through breathing it in, from welders working with carbon and stainless steel and steel mill workers in iron and steel foundries. Periodic sampling and testing is recommended.
Cancer: Hexavalent Chromium compounds have been shown to cause lung cancer in humans when inhaled. Studies
have consistently shown increased lung cancer rates in workers who were exposed to high levels of chromium in workroom air. (https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/agents/hex-chromium)
Testing: Perform periodic monitoring at least every 6 months if initial monitoring shows employee exposure at or above the action level (2.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air calculated as an 8-hour time-weighted average).
