Iron ores — Determination of metallic iron content — Iron(III) chloride titrimetric method

Applicability: ISO 16878 specifies a titrimetric method using iron(III) chloride to determine the metallic iron content (non-oxidized, non-pyrite iron) in reduced iron ores. It is applicable to samples with a metallic iron mass fraction ranging from 57.5% to 90.5%, commonly used for analyzing direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot briquetted iron (HBI).

Purpose: ISO 16878 specifies an iron(III) chloride titrimetric method to accurately determine the metallic iron content (57.5%–90.5% mass fraction) in reduced iron ores, such as direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot briquetted iron (HBI). It defines “metallic iron” as iron not bonded to oxygen or in pyrite.
