EPA SW‑846 Section 7.3.4.2 – Reactive Sulfide (Solid Wastes)
Applicability: This method was developed to identify solid wastes that contain sulfide compounds capable of evolving hydrogen sulfide gas (H₂S) when the waste is exposed to mildly acidic conditions. The evolution of H₂S gas indicates that the waste may exhibit the RCRA reactivity characteristic, as defined under 40 CFR 261.23(a)(5).
Purpose: The purpose of this section is to determine whether a solid waste contains sulfide compounds that can generate hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas when contacted with water or mild acid, thereby indicating the waste exhibits the RCRA reactivity characteristic.
