N-Hexane Extractable Material (HEM; Oil and Grease) and Silica Gel Treated N-Hexane Extractable Material (SGTHEM; Non-polar Material) by Extraction and Gravimetry

Applicability: EPA Method 1664A, specifically designed for the determination of n-hexane extractable material (HEM) and silica gel treated n-hexane extractable material (SGT-HEM) in aqueous samples, is primarily applicable to wastewater and waste matrices within EPA’s Clean Water Act (CWA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) programs. It’s a gravimetric procedure used to measure “oil and grease” and “total petroleum hydrocarbons”.

Purpose: Method 1664A is designed to measure the amount of oil and grease (HEM) and non-polar materials (SGT-HEM) present in various water types, including industrial and domestic wastewater, surface water, and saline water.
