SW-846 Test Method 1030: Ignitability of Solids
Applicability: EPA Method 1030, “Ignitability of Solids,” is a test method used to determine if a solid waste is ignitable, meaning it can cause a fire and sustain combustion. It specifically assesses whether a solid, when ignited, burns so vigorously and persistently that it creates a hazard. While not required by the RCRA regulations to classify a waste as ignitable, it can be used to evaluate a solid’s potential to be an ignitable hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
Purpose: This test method was developed to specifically illustrate the ignitability properties of materials, including wastes, and its results provide relevant and useful information that may be applied to knowledge of a waste in determining whether a waste meets the 40 CFR 261.21 criteria.
