Designating the Size of RDF-3 from the Results of Sieve Analysis

Applicability: ASTM E828 applies to RDF-3, a fluffed or shredded refuse-derived fuel (RDF) produced from processed municipal solid waste (MSW) or commercial and industrial waste streams. It is applicable to fluff-form RDF materials and is not intended for densified forms such as pellets (RDF-5) or briquettes (RDF-6). The method relies on sieve analysis data generated in accordance with established ASTM procedures to characterize the particle size distribution of the RDF-3 fuel.

Purpose: ASTM E828 establishes a standardized designation system for the particle size of RDF-3 based on sieve analysis results, expressed as the minimum sieve opening (in millimeters) through which 95% of the material by mass will pass. This size designation is used in fuel specifications, contracts between RDF producers and energy end-users, and in designing combustion and handling equipment for waste-to-energy facilities, supporting co-firing applications in industrial boilers where consistent fuel particle size is required for stable combustion performance.
