Determination of Ash Content of Particulate Wood Fuels
Applicability: ASTM E1534 applies to particulate wood fuels including wood chips, sawdust, bark, and other woody biomass materials intended for combustion or energy generation. The method is applicable to samples prepared according to ASTM E1757 and covers ash contents typically encountered in commercial wood fuel streams ranging from less than 0.5% to several percent by mass. It is not applicable to non-woody biomass, torrefied wood, or charcoal, for which separate ASTM methods are available.
Purpose: ASTM E1534 determines the ash content of particulate wood fuels by igniting a dried analysis sample in a muffle furnace at 575°C ± 25°C and weighing the non-combustible residue remaining after complete oxidation of organic matter, reporting the result as a percentage of the dry sample mass. Ash content is a key parameter for evaluating fuel quality, predicting slagging and fouling behavior in combustion systems, and assessing the suitability of wood fuels for use in industrial boilers and biomass power plants operating under strict fuel quality specifications.
