Sampling of Green Petroleum Coke

Applicability: ASTM D8145 applies to green (uncalcined) petroleum coke produced from delayed coking and fluid coking processes, intended either for direct use as a fuel or as feedstock for calcination to produce carbon and graphite products. The practice applies and adapts the sampling principles of ASTM D2234/D2234M to the specific physical characteristics and handling requirements of green petroleum coke lots. It covers sample collection from conveyor belts, bucket elevators, stockpiles, and ship or rail car loading streams.

Purpose: ASTM D8145 establishes procedures for collecting representative gross samples of green petroleum coke from bulk lots using increment-based mechanical or manual sampling techniques adapted from the coal sampling framework in ASTM D2234/D2234M. Proper sample collection ensures that analytical results for key quality parameters — including sulfur content, volatile matter, moisture, and ash — are representative of the entire lot; these properties govern the commercial valuation, blending decisions, and selection of green petroleum coke for calcination operations producing anode-grade or needle-grade calcined coke.
