Density and Unit Weight of Soil Specimens

Applicability: ASTM D7263 applies to laboratory determination of the density and unit weight of various soil specimens, including intact, disturbed, remolded, and reconstituted ones. It is applicable to soils that can maintain their shape during the test and can also be used for other materials like soil-cement, soil-lime, soil-bentonite, and solidified slurries. The standard provides methods for calculating total/moist/bulk density, dry density, and dry unit weight.

Purpose: The purpose of ASTM D7263 is to provide standardized methods for determining the laboratory density and unit weight of soil specimens, which is crucial for geotechnical engineers. These measurements are used for a variety of purposes, including classifying soil, checking compaction levels, and as a basis for further tests like unconfined compression, direct shear, and triaxial strength testing.
