Instrumental Determination of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen in Petroleum Products and Lubricants
Applicability: ASTM D5291 is applicable to the instrumental determination of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen in petroleum products and lubricants like crude oils, fuel oils, additives, and residues. However, it is not recommended for volatile materials such as gasoline or gasoline-type aviation turbine fuels, and the nitrogen test has limitations for light materials or those with less than (0.75%) nitrogen.
Purpose: The purpose of ASTM D5291 is to provide standard test methods for the instrumental determination of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content in petroleum products and lubricants. This analysis helps determine the elemental composition of these materials, which is important for quality control, process efficiency, and regulatory compliance in the petroleum and chemical industries.
