Density of Solid Pitch (Helium Pycnometer Method)
Applicability: ASTM D4892 applies to solid coal tar pitch and petroleum pitch used as binders in the manufacture of carbon electrodes, graphite anodes for aluminum smelting, and other carbon and graphite products. The method employs a helium gas pycnometer to measure skeletal density, excluding accessible and inaccessible porosity within the sample material. It covers pitch materials in crushed powder form with densities typically in the range of 1.25 to 1.45 g/cm³.
Purpose: ASTM D4892 determines the true skeletal density of solid pitch by measuring the volume displaced by a precisely weighed sample using helium gas displacement in a calibrated pycnometer. Helium, due to its small atomic radius and chemical inertness, penetrates all accessible pores and surface irregularities, yielding the most accurate representation of the material solid-phase density. Skeletal density is used to characterize pitch binder quality, calculate true porosity of formed carbon artifacts, and monitor the consistency of pitch feedstocks across production batches in the carbon and graphite electrode manufacturing industry.
