Rapid Determination of Carbonate Content of Soils

Applicability: ASTM D4373 is the standard test method for the rapid determination of the carbonate content of soils and soft rock. It is most applicable in geotechnical and geological contexts where the presence of carbonates impacts soil behavior, stability, or construction considerations. The method provides results in terms of “calcite equivalent,” an approximate index of carbonate content.

Purpose: The purpose of ASTM D4373 is to provide a standard test method for the rapid determination of carbonate content in soils and soft rock. The test is primarily used as an index to characterize the approximate carbonate content of a material, which is a key property in geotechnical and engineering contexts.
