Standard Test Methods for Determining the Water (Moisture) Content, Ash Content, and Organic Material of Peat and Other Organic Soils
Applicability: ASTM D2974 is a standard test method used to determine the moisture content, ash content, and organic matter content of peat and other organic soils. It is applicable to various organic soils, including organic clays, silts, and mucks. The standard is used for geotechnical and general classification purposes, as well as for evaluating peats as a fuel.
Purpose: ASTM Method D2974 is used to determine the percent organic matter within soil and sediment. The ash content is determined by igniting the oven-dried sample in a muffle furnace.
