Determination of Single-Stage Moisture

Applicability: This procedure applies to coal, soil, and solid waste samples received or generated by Conti Testing Laboratories, Inc. (CTL), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
1.1. Summary: Single-Stage Total Moisture determined by establishing the weight loss of the coal sample passing through a No. 8 (2.36 mm), sieve, by drying in an oven with forced-air circulation.
1.2. Matrix or Matrices: Coal, soil, and solid wastes.
1.3. Holding Time: None.
1.4. Preservation: None.
1.5. Interferences: The potential for significant oxidation effects in some coals may interfere with single-stage moisture.
1.6. Sample collection and shipment: sample containers are unpreserved, plastic or glass; refer to applicable field methodologies.

Purpose: The purpose of this procedure is to provide a method of measuring total moisture in a coal to determine whether it meets commercial and/or environmental specifications. This method is also used for the determination of single-stage moisture in other materials received in bulk quantities.
