Apparent Density of Activated Carbon
Applicability: ASTM D2854 applies to granular and powdered activated carbon products used in water treatment, air purification, solvent recovery, and industrial chemical processing applications. The method determines the apparent (bulk) density of loose, non-compacted material and is applicable across the range of commercially available activated carbon particle sizes and product forms. Samples should be representative of the lot and handled with care to avoid densification prior to testing.
Purpose: ASTM D2854 determines the apparent density of activated carbon by measuring the mass of material that occupies a standardized cylindrical vessel when filled under defined conditions of free-fall without mechanical compaction, with results expressed in grams per cubic centimeter. Apparent density is used for quality control, specification verification, and comparison of activated carbon products from different manufacturers, and also serves as a conversion factor when specifying or purchasing activated carbon on a volumetric rather than mass basis.
