Heat of Combustion of Liquid Hydrocarbon Fuels by Bomb Calorimeter
Applicability: ASTM D240 is a test method for determining the heat of combustion of liquid hydrocarbon fuels, applicable to a wide range of volatility from light distillates to residual fuels, including gasolines, kerosene, and various fuel oils and gas turbine fuels. It is used to measure the energy available from the fuel.
Purpose: The purpose of ASTM D240 is to provide a standard test method for determining the heat of combustion of liquid hydrocarbon fuels using a bomb calorimeter. This measurement, also known as the calorific value, indicates the total energy released when a fuel is burned and is essential for calculating thermal efficiency, and for qualifying fuels for commercial, military, and aviation uses.
