Soundness of Aggregates by Use of Sodium Sulfate or Magnesium Sulfate
Applicability: ASTM C88 and AASHTO T104 are both standard test methods used to evaluate the soundness of aggregates by measuring their resistance to disintegration when subjected to repeated cycles of immersion in a sodium or magnesium sulfate solution and drying. Essentially, they are the same test, with AASHTO T104 being the equivalent of ASTM C88.
Purpose: These tests aim to estimate the durability of aggregates when exposed to weathering, mimicking the effects of freeze-thaw cycles and salt action.
