Mixing Water Used in the Production of Hydraulic Cement Concrete
Applicability: Applies to water from any source intended for use in mixing or curing hydraulic cement concrete, including municipal potable water, non-potable water, water recovered from concrete production processes, and combination waters. Specifies acceptable limits for chemical constituents, compressive strength, and setting time to ensure that mixing water does not adversely affect concrete strength, durability, or setting behavior.
Purpose: Establishes acceptance criteria and testing procedures for evaluating water quality for use in hydraulic cement concrete production. Requires testing for chloride ion content, sulfate content, alkali content, and other potentially harmful substances, as well as mortar cube compressive strength and setting time comparisons against a potable water control. Ensures that non-potable or recycled water sources do not introduce contaminants that could cause reinforcement corrosion, inhibit cement hydration, promote deleterious reactions, or reduce concrete performance below specification requirements.
