Relative Density (Specific Gravity) and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate
Applicability: ASTM C127 / AASHTO T85 are standard test methods for determining the density, relative density (specific gravity), and absorption of coarse aggregate. It is primarily used in construction to assess the properties of aggregates used in concrete and other mixtures. The test methods are not applicable to lightweight aggregates. It is specifically for coarse aggregates.
Purpose: ASTM C127 / AASHTO T85 measures the density of the solid part of the aggregate particles, excluding the volume of voids between them. This is expressed as oven-dry (OD), saturated-surface-dry (SSD), or apparent relative density (apparent specific gravity). The tests also determines how much water the aggregate can absorb, which is important for maintaining the correct water-cement ratio in concrete mixes.
