Materials Finer than 75-μm (No. 200) Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing
Applicability: ASTM C117 and AASHTO T11 are nearly identical test methods used to determine the amount of material finer than a 75-µm (No. 200) sieve in mineral aggregates by washing. They are essentially the same test with minor variations in the wording and format of the standard. While AASHTO T11 is tailored for transportation materials, and ASTM C117 is a broader standard, the core testing procedures and results are essentially the same.
Purpose: Both methods aim to determine the percentage of material passing the No. 200 sieve by washing. The key purpose is to quantify fine material, including clay and water-soluble particles, that are washed away from larger aggregate particles.
