Multiple Extraction Procedure

Applicability: EPA Method 1320, the Multiple Extraction Procedure (MEP), is designed to simulate long-term leaching of waste in a landfill, specifically simulating 1000 years of freeze/thaw cycles and acid rain exposure, and is used for waste characterization and long-term stability assessment.

Purpose: The MEP (Method 1320) is a SW-846 test method designed to assess the long-term leachability of hazardous waste, particularly in a landfill environment. It simulates the leaching process that occurs over a long period (1000 years) due to factors like acid rain and freeze/thaw cycles, which are common in landfills. The MEP is particularly useful for determining the long-term stability and potential for leaching of hazardous waste components, which is crucial for proper waste disposal and management.
