Standard Test Method for Forms of Sulfur in Coal by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry
Applicability: ASTM D8214 is a standard test method for determining the forms of sulfur (sulfate sulfur, pyritic sulfur, and organic sulfur) in coal. It utilizes Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The method is specifically for coal and is not applicable to coke or other carbonaceous materials.
Purpose: The purpose is to analyze and quantify the different forms of sulfur present in coal samples.
Key Components Analyzed:
– Sulfate sulfur: Sulfur present as sulfates, often formed during coal oxidation.
– Pyritic sulfur: Sulfur present as pyrite (FeS2).
– Organic sulfur: Sulfur that is chemically bound within the organic matrix of the coal, calculated by difference.
