Screening Apparent Specific Gravity and Bulk Density of Waste
Applicability: ASTM D5057 is a standard test method for screening the apparent specific gravity and bulk density of waste using gravimetric procedures, intended for waste management industries to estimate these properties for waste characterization and volume-to-weight conversions.
Purpose: ASTM D5057 provides a method to determine the apparent specific gravity and bulk density of waste samples, which can be used to convert measured volumes to weights and indicate the character of the waste. This test method is applicable to various waste types, including liquids, sludges, and solids, and is designed as a preliminary test to complement more sophisticated analytical techniques. The method involves comparing the mass of a waste sample to the mass of an equal volume of reagent water for materials in Groups A and C, and a direct mass/volume ratio for Group B wastes, which are water-reactive.
