Relative Density (Specific Gravity) and Absorption of Fine Aggregate
Applicability: ASTM C128 / AASHTO T84 are standard test methods used to determine the relative density (specific gravity) and absorption of fine aggregates, which are materials like sand used in concrete and other construction applications. This test is crucial for assessing the quality and suitability of aggregates for specific uses, influencing factors like concrete strength, durability, and workability.
Purpose: ASTM C128 /AAHSTO T84 determine the density of the solid portion of fine aggregate particles, excluding the space between them. They also measures the relative density, or specific gravity, which is the ratio of the density of the aggregate to the density of water. This can be expressed as oven-dry (OD), saturated-surface-dry (SSD), or apparent specific gravity.
