Oxidation Stability of Aviation Fuels (Potential Residue Method)
Applicability: ASTM D873 is a standard test method applicable to aviation reciprocating, turbine, and jet engine fuels. It is not intended for determining the stability of fuel components, particularly those with a high percentage of low-boiling unsaturated compounds, which may cause explosive conditions within the apparatus.
Purpose: The purpose of ASTM D873 is to determine the tendency of aviation fuels to form gum and deposits under accelerated aging conditions. The results can be used as an indication of the storage stability of these fuels, although gum and deposit formation in the test has not been correlated with field performance under different storage conditions.
