Shake Extraction of Solid Waste with Water

Applicability: This procedure applies to leaching of solid waste to obtain an aqueous solution to be used to determine the constituents leached under specific conditions for inorganic parameters of samples received by Conti Testing Laboratories, Inc. (CTL), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
1.1. Method Reference: ASTM D3987
1.2. Summary
1.2.1. The known mass of a waste sample is shook with a specified amount of DI water. The separated aqueous phase is then extracted and ran for analysis.
1.2.2. Waste solids samples are prepared by quartering the sample, then drying the sample for 16-20 hours to determine solids content. The sample is then extracted with an amount of extraction fluid, or reagent grade DI water, equal to 20 times the weight (grams) of the solid phase. Following the extraction, the liquid phase extract is separated from the solid material by pressure filtration through a 0.45 um filter. The resulted filtered extract is then measured for pH.

Purpose: The purpose of this procedure is to determine the mobility of analytes present in the waste.
