Determination of % Residual Moisture

Applicability: This procedure applies to coal, coke, soil samples received or generated by Conti Testing Laboratories, Inc. (CTL), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
1.1. Summary: Moisture is determined by establishing the loss of weight of the sample when heated under rigidly controlled conditions of temperature, time and atmosphere, sample weight, and equipment specifications.
1.2. Matrix or Matrices: Coal, Coke, and soil.
1.3. Holding Time: None.
1.4. Preservation: None.
1.5. Interferences: None
1.6. Sample collection and shipment: sample containers are unpreserved, plastic or glass; refer to applicable field methodologies.

Purpose: The purpose of this procedure is to provide a method of determination of the residual moisture (“as determined” lab moisture) in a sample by determining the weight loss of the sample after drying. For small sample quantities, this determination gives the total “as received” moisture.
